How often do I change oil?
Harley-Davidson recommends changing the oil and filter each 5,000 miles. If you ride in extreme conditions, you will want to change the filter and oil more often. So, what is extreme? When it is especially hot or cold, or where there is a lot of airborne particulate matter.

Oil is the life-blood of your bike. Not only does it lubricate, but it cools. If you want to ensure a longer life, we recommend you change your oil each 3,000 miles. Finally, if you change the oil, change the filter. Pushing clean oil through a dirty filter...well, is like putting on dirty clothes after a refreshing shower. It doesn't make sense.

What is involved if I want to upgrade to new pipes?
In addition to selecting the pipes you like best, you will also want to upgrade your breathing system. Freer flowing pipes mean more air can be expelled. You will not reap the benefit of these upgrades if you keep your stock breathing system installed. It is like having new running shoes but trying to run with a sock stuffed in your mouth.

For EFI owners, an updated computer download will ensure the fuel is metered to the cylinders properly. Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® muffler systems have factory-patterned downloads. For aftermarket exhaust systems like Vance-Hines, additional components are available to ensure your bike runs correctly.

Do I need an appointment for service?
Not normally. We are striving to cut down on the waiting game for service at Wild Prairie Harley-Davidson. We want you in and out and quickly as feasible. An appointment is encouraged and is necessary at time. Our goal is to turn around most scheduled services (1,000, 5,000, 10,000 inspections) in two days, with or without an appointment. Check the main Service Page for an update on appointment requirements. If the labor required is less than an hour or so, we can usually do the work while you wait. (Plan on an extra 30 minutes for us to wash your bike). Bikes with larger accessory projects and runability jobs are more difficult to predict. Your Service Advisor will be able to predict with good accuracy the length of time we will need the bike.

Why are my pipes turning yellow and blue?
High performance motorcycle engines develop large amounts of heat, causing bluing and discoloration to chromed pipes, especially at the header.

Motorcycle exhaust pipes are usually chrome plated. The chrome serves as a protection against rust, abrasion, and the occasional oil spray. While chrome is a uniquely inert coating, even the best plating job will turn yellow, gold, and then blue when subjected to extreme temperatures that can be generated in a high-performance engine. An out-of-tune engine can cause bluing far down the motorcycle pipe where the exhaust is supposed to be cooler. Almost every new bike will blue the header pipe for a few inches from the head in the first several hundred miles.

So what is the answer? Purchase high quality products that have excellent shielding, and keep your bike serviced and tuned. In the end, remember, all pipes will discolor because of high heat. On a well-tuned bike, the discoloration dissipates the further the distance from the exhaust header. Great manufacturers know that heat shields keep pipes looking great.

Screamin' Eagle® SYN3® Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant - SAE 20W50
